The Video-Play Patrimony and the World of Cultural Heritage
The conservation of video games has become more and more professional via associations. Faced with this phenomenon, the discrepancy with the domain of public action has been underscored. If a large exhibition validates the cultural aspect of video games and the importance of their conservation, a proper policy concerning video games’ cultural heritage has not yet been created. Few are able to intervene in this atypical subject in the public arena. It could have been addressed by the former museum of Popular Arts and Traditions (musée des Arts et traditions populaires), but its shift in focus toward Euro-Mediterranean cultures distances it from the subjects of leisure activities and entertainment in France.
The issue for the upcoming years is the re-creation of an establishment where the video game is recognized as a component of Franche and international cultural history; its history can only be inscribed in the context of cultural exchanges with the United States and Japan.
